This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot. I am thrilled to be working with The Home Depot this spring to improve our home & garden. #DigIn #ad
Last week I told you about our DIY Herb Garden that we are making as a family! I’m excited to say that we had wonderful weather this past week, & we were able to finish staining our herb garden. Then yesterday we were able to get all of our herbs planted! Yay! Today I’m excited to share how we made our DIY Herb Garden, so that YOU can make one, too! 🙂
UPDATE: I stained my wood. A few readers expressed concern about this step. If you are worried about the stain leaking into your soil & herbs then simply skip this step or use a non-toxic stain. I did not stain the inside of my boxes so I wasn’t too concerned about it, but that’s just me. 😉 This year I’m actually planning on doing a flower garden instead of herbs! I’ll update soon! 😉
The first thing you’ll need to do is gather the supplies. We were able to find everything we needed to build our DIY Herb Garden ~ the building supplies, the herbs, the watering can, liquid fertilizer and potting soil ~ all at The Home Depot. Yay! The Home Depot offers YOU the most innovative home improvement products available which make DIY projects like this even easier than ever before. Plus The Home Depot workers were so helpful, and they helped us find everything we needed. 🙂
Supply List:
(7) 8 foot cedar boards
1 box Composite Deck Screws II – brown (comes with a drill bit)
Miter Saw
Drill
1/2 inch Drill Bit
sandpaper & hand sander
potting soil
liquid fertilizer
herbs
Now that we have our supplies ~ are YOU ready for the DIY Herb Garden tutorial? OK here we go! 🙂
First you’ll cut your 8 foot cedar boards into the following lengths:
(10) 27 inch long boards ~ back & bottom of troughs
(5) 30 inch long boards ~ front of troughs
(10) 4 3/4 inch long boards ~ sides of troughs
(2) 5 foot 6 inch long boards ~ sides of herb garden
*Remember safety first! Always wear ear & eye protection when working with power tools & saws! Annnnd be careful!
After your wood is cut, you’ll assemble each box like this with the wood screws & a drill:
The longer board will hang over on each side. That’s what you want. 🙂 After all of your troughs are finished you can drill some drain holes in the bottom of each trough with 1/2 inch drill bit.
Our finished troughs! We actually have 5 troughs total. One for each kiddo! 🙂 Then I sanded our troughs with some sandpaper.
To see how it was going to work we leaned the two 5 foot 6 inch boards against the side of the house. We sat one trough on the ground to get an idea of where & what angle we would need to attach them.
FYI: Before we sat our boards up we had cut a slight 17 1/2 degree angle with our miter saw on the very bottom of the long boards so that the boards would sit smooth against the ground.
Next we spaced our troughs evenly along one of the long boards making sure they were all angled correctly. You can use a pencil to kind of mark where each trough is in case it moves a little before you can get them screwed down.
Then we screwed each trough to the long board with the wood screws & a drill. Once they were all secured we flipped it over & screwed the other side down.
Boom! It was done! Wahoo! This project took about 2 or 3 hours to complete. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon. 😉
Later I also made some super cute & simple herb garden markers! All I needed was some popsicle sticks, vinyl lettering & paint. Aren’t they cute?? 😉
Then it was time to plant our herbs. 🙂 Remember you can go green this spring with The Home Depot. The Home Depot has the latest organic gardening tools, equipment and supplies. Everything you need to make the perfect herb garden. The Home Depot also has a large selection of raised garden beds, composters, liquid fertilizer, planters, containers and everything you need for your herb garden. Ok, I LOVE this! We are in a townhouse with a pretty small deck and no garden space, so this is PERFECT for us…and we're looking at houses, so it's great that this is something we can take with us when we move! I am going to ask hubby if he can make one of these for me 🙂 Pinning!
This is so cool!!!! I actually have a spot in our back yard for 3 of these! Now to get my hubby to build them for me…
I love the herb garden but I love the markers even more. I've been trying to decide how to label my veggies this year and I think I'm going to use your idea.
My husband would totally love building this. I am hosting a link party on my blog and I would love it if you stopped by and linked up this tutorial! Have a great weekend!

This turned out great!
Thanks everyone! This really was one of the quickest & easiest DIY projects we've ever done! I hope you do try it! Let me know how it goes. 🙂
This project is awesome! Love love love this idea!
What a great herb garden. This is really clever.
I am your newest GFC.

Love that! It looks so great but I just love that it doesn't take up a pile of room either. You did such a great job!
I was looking at the wood on line and I am wondering the width of the wood you got and if it was dried. I saw some that said it was dried, and some not. I'm thinking it is dried as you used the stain on it and it sort of looked like what I saw. And did you do it or your husband? I'd like to try my hand…but I have used power tools much. Laurie aka LTsaysso2u@gmail.com
@ltsaysso2u I'll email you, too but I'll answer your questions here, too in case some one else has the same questions. 🙂
The boards we got were 1×6's that are 8 feet long. The actual measurement is about 5 1/2 inches wide. The wood is dried, I believe. We bought it at Home Depot in the lumber section. We bought cedar & stained it so it would last longer outside.
I helped with it, but my hubby did cut the wood. I'm not big on power tools either. 😉 I know Home Depot will cut your wood for you if you bring in the measurements.
Hope that helps, and I really hope you try it out. 🙂
Oh…I need to get started on my garden!
I love this herb garden so much!
Pretty please share this on a link party that I host with 4 other blogs called Moonlight & Mason Jars. Oh and I added your link party to my directory as well.

I'm going to try to talk Chris into building this with me this weekend 🙂 Pinned and featuring tonight!
Did a post on the one that hubby built me! I LOVE it! Thanks again for sharing the tutorial! http://www.unoriginalmom.com/diy-window-box-herb-garden/
I have what might be a dumb question, but is it safe to stain something that food is growing in? Wouldn't the stain leech into the soil and contaminate the food? I'm making my own beds this year and love the look of the stain but was wondering this… thanks in advance and good job to your hubby!! 🙂
I did stain my wood. A few readers have expressed concern about this step. Made one of these today! Worked out great — thanks SO much for the tutorial!
Nice! I got my brain working on how to add in ground or in-trough watering system to this. Perhaps run PVC (with small holes) through the bottom of the troughs. Hide main pipe along rung in back. I dunno. I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet so brain ain't in full function. HA! I am going to build this but would like it to be self watering somehow. Not lazy…just gone a lot.
Do squirrels crawl up here and eat your herbs? Around my house, squirrels are pigs and eat everything in sight…
Does it stand up on it's own or does it have to be leaning against something?
Thanks for posting this! We just build it in less than 3 hours and it looks very nice.
We don't have many squirrels around here! Buuuut knowing them I bet they would!
It has to lean up against something. Thanks for your question!
That is so awesome! Thank you for letting me know! 🙂
I just built this planter this past weekend. I made a few modifications though. I had found window box liner trays at home depot that fit a 36" window planter (was about 32" long). I liked the idea of the plastic liner to make it easier to plant/replant over and over. Width-wise, they were a perfect fit in the boxes, but they were longer, so I had to adjust the measurements some (34" for the bottom and side, and 37" for the front). This of course meant I needed more wood (2 pieces), but the results were great. They did have smaller liners that may not require any adjustments. The liners had 2 3/4" holes in them, and I used them as a guide to drill holes in the wood so it drained perfectly. Home Depot now carries colored pre-treated wood, so I was able to achieve the red look without staining (and since it is in a liner, I'm not worried about any chemicals the pre-treatment might have). All in all, it was a fun project! I can't wait to plant in it!
Awesome! I'll have to check out those liners. They sound perfect for a project like this! 🙂
I just built this today, and I'm in love. Thanks a ton for the tutorial, it was perfect.
Awesome! That makes me so happy! 🙂
Hi Do you mind if I ask what you paid for the wood? Ones I saw were $20 a piece. If you still happened to have it, a product number would be a great help. Thanks
We used the these boards from Home Depot. They were around $14 a piece.

Nice post, Mark. Great tips about the mowing and watering, also, you pointed out good seeding is important.. garden maintenance
I think you would have saved money on the screws if you bought them from Fastenere instead of home depot
